Supreme Court Bans Unauthorised Social Media Clips of Court Proceedings
In a major interim ruling, the Supreme Court of India has prohibited the extraction, editing, uploading, dissemination, or monetisation of audio-video recordings of judicial proceedings on social media and digital platforms without prior permission.
Written approval must now be obtained from the Secretary General of the Supreme Court or the Registrar General of the concerned High Court.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. Mohana passed the order while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) highlighting how selective, decontextualised clips of livestreamed hearings are sensationalised online.
The court noted that treating courtroom exchanges as viral content undermines judicial dignity and erodes public trust.
Crucially, the bench clarified that this restriction targets social media misuse and will not affect fair and accurate news reporting by journalists.
