Sonam Wangchuk Ends 26-Day Hunger Strike Over Paper Leaks
Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk ended his 26-day fast at Gurugram’s Medanta Hospital following key government outreach. Wangchuk had been fasting since June 28 in solidarity with student protests demanding strict reforms and accountability after widespread examination paper leaks.
He broke his fast in the presence of Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Dr. Jitendra Singh, alongside representatives from the Apex Body of Leh-Ladakh. Over 65 Members of Parliament across party lines had urged him to end the strike.
Wangchuk noted that the decision was made after reaching mutually agreed conditions and to prevent potential unrest across the country.
In response, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed relief and assured swift action against perpetrators. The government announced a stringent anti-paper leak bill, the creation of fast-track courts for speedy trials, major administrative reshuffles in the Ministry of Education, and measures to ensure affected students do not lose an academic year.
