Calcutta High Court Halts Demolition of Abhishek Banerjee’s Office
In a rare Sunday sitting, the Calcutta High Court ordered an immediate halt to the demolition of Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee’s Diamond Harbour constituency office in Amtala.
The South 24 Parganas district administration began demolishing portions of the five-story building on Saturday, claiming the structure lacked a sanctioned plan from the Zilla Parishad. However, the property owner, Leaps and Bounds Private Limited, filed an urgent writ petition alleging a violation of statutory procedures and natural justice, stating they were never given a fair hearing.
Justice Raja Basu Chowdhury ordered all parties to maintain a strict status quo regarding the building's nature and possession. Noting a lack of evidence that the petitioner was adequately heard before the excavators arrived, the court stayed the demolition until the end of July, directing the state to submit all relevant documents to a regular bench.
