Court Rejects Plea to Move Sonam Wangchuk to Private Hospital

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court, in a special Sunday hearing, declined to pass an interim order to shift climate activist Sonam Wangchuk from the government-run Safdarjung Hospital to a private facility.

The plea, filed by his wife Dr. Gitanjali J. Angmo, claimed the government hospital manipulated health reports to justify "illegal detention" after Wangchuk was forcibly removed from his Jantar Mantar hunger strike on Saturday.

Justice Mini Pushkarna ruled that the government's intervention was not arbitrary, given Wangchuk's deteriorating health after 21 days of fasting over alleged NEET exam irregularities.

The court noted that Wangchuk is not under detention, no medical force has been used, and his family has 24/7 access.

The bench directed authorities to submit a fresh status report on his health within three days, listing the matter for a detailed hearing on July 24, 2026.
