UP Appoints Panchayat Chiefs as Administrators in Historic Move
Lucknow: In a historic first, the Uttar Pradesh government has appointed outgoing District Panchayat Chairpersons as interim administrators following the expiration of their five-year terms.
Traditionally, District Magistrates or senior bureaucrats assume these roles during election delays. This marks the first time sitting political heads have been retained to oversee local governance.
The stopgap arrangement was triggered by delayed local body polls, stalled due to pending revisions of OBC reservation matrices. However, these new administrators will operate with heavily restricted powers; they are permitted to handle only routine, day-to-day administrative tasks and are strictly barred from launching new financial projects or policy initiatives without bureaucratic approval.
While the decision ensures continuity, it faces legal scrutiny. Critics argue that extending political control via administrative appointments challenges constitutional mandates like Article 243-E. The interim setup is capped at six months or until fresh elections conclude.
