Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran steps down, to serve out term till February
New Delhi : Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran has announced that he will step down from his position and will not seek reappointment when his current term expires on February 20, 2027.
Chandrasekaran will remain at the helm to complete his full tenure, ensuring stability ahead of the transition. His announcement comes just ahead of the Tata Sons annual general meeting (AGM) scheduled for August 18. Standoff and Governance Tensions. His decision follows months of uncertainty and a prolonged deadlock regarding his contract renewal.
While the major philanthropic arms—the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust—unanimously recommended a five-year extension, the proposal stalled after a board member withheld support back in February.

In his statement, Chandrasekaran noted that six months had passed without a resolution to the board deadlock. Emphasizing that major group projects are at critical execution phases, he urged the board to establish succession plans early to provide clear leadership direction for employees, investors, and stakeholders.
