FSSAI Bans Plastic and Aluminium Foil Packaging for Pan Masala
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has strictly banned plastic and aluminium foil-based packaging for pan masala under the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Amendment Regulations.
The notification outlaws multi-layered plastic sachets, pouches, and metallised layers traditionally used for these products.
Manufacturers are now restricted to using sustainable alternatives, such as 100% plastic-free pure paper, paperboard, or cellulose, as well as rigid containers like traditional tin or glass.
This regulatory shift aligns food safety standards with the Plastic Waste Management Rules, effectively phasing out ubiquitous single-use plastic laminates to curb environmental pollution.
The updated guidelines came into force immediately upon publication in the Official Gazette, leaving manufacturers to rapidly transition their supply chains and packaging lines to compliant materials like glass and tin.
