Lok Sabha Panel Finds Cash Allegations Against Justice Varma 'Proved'

A parliamentary inquiry committee has concluded that cash allegations against former High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma are "proved."

The panel, led by Supreme Court Justice Aravind Kumar, investigated the discovery of substantial, burnt and scattered currency notes in a storeroom of Justice Varma’s official Delhi residence following a March 2025 fire.

The committee rejected his defense that the area was outside his control, criticizing his replies as "evasive" and citing an adverse inference because he did not enter the witness box.

While the panel stopped short of conclusively determining the direct criminal ownership of the cash due to a lack of an immediate formal inventory, it established that the unaccounted money was present.

Justice Varma resigned in April 2026 while the statutory inquiry was ongoing, but the report has now been formally tabled in Parliament.
