Parliamentary Panel Recommends Mandatory Biannual Kidney Tests for All Adults Aged 20 and Above
A parliamentary panel has recommended that all Indians aged 20 and above undergo mandatory kidney function tests every six months to tackle the rising burden of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).
Released by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare, the report emphasizes a critical shift from managing end-stage renal failure to early prevention.
India witnesses approximately 2.2 lakh new kidney failure cases annually, driving a staggering demand for 3.4 crore dialysis sessions.
To make screenings accessible, the panel proposed that tests be provided free for Below Poverty Line (APL/BPL adjustments) individuals and at nominal rates for others under the NP-NCD program.
Furthermore, the committee urged that serum creatinine tests automatically include estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) reporting across all diagnostic labs.
Additional measures include targeted annual screenings for high-risk demographics, establishing a National CKD Registry, and expanding grassroots prevention via Ayushman Arogya Mandirs.
