UPI Stays Free for Consumers; Nominal Fees Weighed for Large Merchants
The Indian government has reassured that UPI will remain entirely free for everyday consumers.
Person-to-person transfers and ordinary retail purchases will continue without any extra charges.
Small kirana stores and micro-merchants will also be fully protected from merchant fees.

However, authorities are exploring a framework that could introduce nominal fees later.
Crucially, any future charges would apply exclusively to large-scale, high-volume commercial merchants.
