UN Climate Chief Backs India's Green Energy Corridor Phase3

UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell has strongly welcomed India's approval of the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III (GEC-III) scheme, praising it as a vital milestone that will deliver significant economic and social benefits.

Stiell emphasized that the initiative is critical for helping India manage its rapidly growing renewable energy capacity and meet daily consumer power demands reliably. He highlighted that the project further cements India's status as a global solar superpower. Furthermore, by incorporating advanced battery storage infrastructure, the scheme establishes a strategic blueprint for major economies to ensure long-term energy security alongside sustainable economic growth.

Approved by the Union Cabinet, GEC-III involves a massive total outlay of Rs 1,86,405 crore, which includes central financial support of Rs 54,082 crore to keep electricity affordable for end users. The core objectives of the initiative are to build a robust Intra-State Transmission System capable of evacuating 135 GW of renewable energy and to deploy 50 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems by FY 2032–33. By tackling power curtailment and transmission bottlenecks, GEC-III ensures grid stability and maximizes the utilization of clean power across the country.
