Trump orders deployment of nuclear submarines after Medvedev's 'dead hand' remark
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he has ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines to areas near Russia in response to threats by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. "I have ordered two nuclear submarines to be deployed to
the appropriate areas to ensure that these foolish and provocative statements do not become anything more," Trump said in a social media post, calling Medvedev's statements "extremely provocative".
He said he ordered the submarines because "words are very important and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those examples".
Trump and Medvedev, who is the deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, have recently been at loggerheads. Trump said on Tuesday that Russia had "10 days from today" to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine or face tariffs from its oil buyers.
Moscow, which has set its own conditions for peace in Ukraine, has given no indication it will adhere to Trump's deadline.
Medvedev on Monday accused Trump of playing a "game of ultimatums" and reminded him that Russia retains Soviet-era nuclear strike capabilities as a last resort, as Trump told Medvedev to "mind your words."
Medvedev has emerged as one of the Kremlin's most vocal anti-Western leaders since Russia sent thousands of troops to Ukraine in 2022. Kremlin critics deride him as an irresponsible and unbridled cannon, though some Western diplomats say his statements reflect the thinking of senior Kremlin policymaking circles
