Tragedy at Puri Rath Yatra: 1 Dead, Over 30 Hospitalized in Crowd Rush

A wave of grief hit the annual Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri after a massive crowd rush and suffocating humidity led to the death of a 55-year-old devotee, Anil Dash.

The tragic incident unfolded on the Grand Road (Bada Danda) near Marichikota Square as millions gathered to pull the sacred chariots.

The overwhelming surge of pilgrims, combined with intense heat, caused severe congestion. Over 30 devotees were rushed to the Puri District Headquarters Hospital after sustaining injuries or fainting from suffocation.

Emergency rescue teams and police personnel acted swiftly, navigating the dense crowds to evacuate affected individuals on stretchers and via standby ambulances.

While medical teams remain on high alert to treat the injured, local authorities have intensified crowd management measures, urging the massive gathering of pilgrims to stay hydrated and cooperate with security protocols to prevent further incidents.
