Two fatalities in 48 hours have cast a somber shadow over this year’s Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, highlighting the extreme dangers of high-altitude pilgrimage.
On July 21, 63-year-old pilgrim Gauri Shankar Khandelwal suffered a fatal cardiac arrest near Lipulekh Pass while returning to India. Just a day prior, 37-year-old support staff member Jeewan Ram died in his sleep in Tibet after experiencing severe oxygen drops at 16,000 feet.
The tragedy comes alongside severe weather disruptions. Heavy rainfall has triggered landslides near Tawaghat, stranding the fifth batch of pilgrims at Dharchula while border clearance crews work to clear blocked roads.
With elevations exceeding 15,000 feet along the trans-Himalayan route, authorities and medical teams at high-altitude posts have issued urgent advisories.
Pilgrims and personnel are urged to strictly monitor their oxygen saturation and report symptoms like dizziness or chest discomfort immediately.
