Three in Four Female Chess Players Face Bias or Harassment: FIDE Survey

A landmark survey conducted by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Commission for Women's Chess reveals that over 75% of female players have experienced gender bias or harassment within the sport.

The study shows that 63% of respondents encountered direct gender discrimination, while 38% reported facing sexual harassment or inappropriate conduct.

The figures rise sharply among titled players, with 81% experiencing bias and 55% reporting sexual harassment.

Additionally, online toxicity remains a major issue, affecting nearly 38% of players.

Driven by these systemic issues rather than logistical constraints, roughly 44% of female players have considered quitting chess entirely.

FIDE officials stressed that the findings serve as a critical call to action, outlining plans for stricter conduct enforcement, safe reporting mechanisms, and mentorship initiatives to create an inclusive environment for women in global chess.
