Johnson & Johnson Reaches $5.5 Billion Talc Settlement

Johnson & Johnson has agreed to a proposed $5.5 billion settlement to resolve roughly 76,000 lawsuits alleging that its talc-based baby powder caused ovarian cancer. This agreement applies strictly to existing claims and does not cover future lawsuits.

Payouts are expected to begin around 2027. For the deal to become final, it requires the formal consent of a presiding federal judge and the approval of at least 95% of participating claimants.

Despite the massive financial resolution, J&J maintains no liability, insisting its products are safe, asbestos-free, and do not cause cancer. The company stated it chose to settle to achieve final closure and move past the lingering litigation.

J&J fully transitioned to a cornstarch-based baby powder globally by 2023, leaving the decades-long talc controversy behind.
