IndiGo and Air India to Shift Flights to Navi Mumbai Airport Ahead of Mumbai Terminal 1 Overhaul

MUMBAI: Major Indian carriers, including IndiGo and the Air India Group, are preparing to transition a portion of their flight operations from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) to the newly operational Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA).

The operational shift is designed to ease capacity constraints at CSMIA as the airport prepares for a multi-year redevelopment of Terminal 1 (T1). Under the plan, airlines will progressively move select domestic routes and 38 international departures currently based at CSMIA Terminal 2 over to NMIA. IndiGo plans to relocate 12 daily international services—primarily targeting Middle Eastern destinations such as Riyadh, Dammam, Jeddah, and Muscat—while Air India Express and its parent group will shift key regional short-haul routes.

The redevelopment of CSMIA's aging Terminal 1 aims to expand its capacity from 15 million to 20 million passengers annually by 2030, featuring modern passenger infrastructure and enhanced security zones. With both CSMIA and NMIA operated under Adani Airport Holdings, the coordinated reallocation of slots ensures uninterrupted regional connectivity and prevents severe air traffic congestion throughout the construction period. Mumbai's existing Terminal 1 (T1) is undergoing a comprehensive redevelopment expected to run through 2030.
