India Set for Early Sugar Imports to Cool Prices
India is on track to receive its first duty-free raw sugar imports in a decade before October 15, following a government policy shift permitting up to one million tonnes.
Primarily sourced from Brazil due to shortages in Thailand, these initial shipments will arrive ahead of the peak festive season to stabilize domestic supplies.
The move coincides with aggressive government stock limits and anti-hoarding measures, which have already successfully curbed speculative trading and reduced ex-mill prices by approximately five rupees per kilogram. Port-adjacent states like Maharashtra and Karnataka will receive the earliest consignments.
Meanwhile, industry bodies anticipate that domestic crushing operations will begin by mid-to-late October, ensuring a steady continuous flow of fresh inventory into the market as the festive demand peaks.
