FSSAI Puts Influencers and Celebrities on Notice for Misleading Food Ads
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a strict directive holding social media influencers, digital creators, and celebrities legally accountable for misleading food and beverage promotions.
Under the motto "With great influence comes great responsibility," the regulator mandates that public figures independently verify all health and nutrition claims—such as boosting immunity or nutritional richness—before endorsing products.
Endorsing unverified or exaggerated claims violates the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, exposing creators to heavy penalties and legal action.
This crackdown aims to protect consumers from deceptive marketing and ensure transparency in the digital advertising ecosystem.
FSSAI has also urged citizens to report deceptive endorsements via its Food Safety Connect platform, reinforcing corporate and influencer accountability across online spaces.
