Eiffel Tower Strike Highlights Clash Over Workplace Equality
Paris’s Eiffel Tower reopened following a staff strike triggered by instructions given to female workers during a visit by a Hindu delegation.
Around 100 members of the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) group visited the monument following a temple inauguration nearby. Staff unions revealed that female employees were directed to leave their workstations or vacate specific areas so male colleagues could take over, strictly minimizing interaction with the delegates. Outraged by the directive, workers staged a walkout over gender discrimination.
The tower’s operating company, SETE, admitted accepting a request to limit female contact, calling it an unacceptable breach of gender equality values.
SETE issued a formal apology to staff before reopening the site. BAPS expressed regret, stating they pre-arranged crowd flow with management and were unaware staff were removed. French political leaders condemned the orders, prompting an official investigation.
