E20 Ethanol Petrol Controversy Deepens: Govt Issues Clarification; Diesel Up Next

New Delhi: Tension is escalating between vehicle owners and the government following the mandatory rollout of E20 (20% ethanol-blended) petrol across all fuel stations nationwide. Car and bike owners claim that the new fuel blend has caused a 15-20% drop in mileage and poses a severe threat to older vehicles (manufactured before April 2023) by damaging engine rubbers and fuel lines. Furthermore, rumors regarding voided vehicle warranties and ants infesting engines have gone viral on social media.

In response to the growing public backlash, the Ministry of Petroleum and major automakers like Maruti Suzuki have issued official clarifications. The government stated that using E20 fuel will not void any vehicle's warranty or insurance claims. Auto experts have also dismissed engine failure fears, clarifying that the actual drop in mileage is negligible, hovering between just 3% and 4%.

Amidst this controversy, the government is pushing ahead with its green fuel transition. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that after petrol, plans are now underway to blend 15% Isobutanol (a derivative of ethanol) into diesel. The government remains firm on this policy as it significantly slashes India's massive crude oil import bills and boosts the local agricultural economy.
