Dhaka Halts Hilsa Imports from India Amid Mislabeling Outcry

Bangladesh has abruptly suspended all hilsa imports from India and Myanmar after the Department of Fisheries cancelled 103 importer permits.

The crackdown follows widespread market anomalies where cheaper Indian hilsa—specifically roe-filled catches imported from Gujarat at around Tk 500 per kg—was deceptively repackaged and sold to unsuspecting consumers as premium. Locally prized Padma hilsa for up to Tk 3,000 per kg.

Authorities also cited growing concerns over under-invoicing and potential financial malpractice.

This sudden prohibition has left traders facing heavy financial losses on stranded border shipments.

Furthermore, it has sparked serious anxiety among fish importers in West Bengal, who fear Dhaka may retaliate or withhold its customary goodwill exports of Padma hilsa ahead of the upcoming Durga Puja festive season.
