Chhattisgarh's Stringent Anti-Conversion Law Takes Effect

The Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly passed the rigorous Freedom of Religion Bill, 2026, replacing legacy legislation with strict penalties to combat unlawful conversions.

The law explicitly penalizes conversions achieved through force, fraud, misrepresentation, undue influence, or allurement—broadly defining incentives like employment, gifts, or free education.

Under the legislation, mass conversions (involving two or more people) carry severe punishments ranging from 10 years to life imprisonment and hefty fines up to ₹25 lakh.

Penalties escalate further when violations involve minors, women, or individuals belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

Furthermore, the Act mandates a strict 30-day prior notice to the District Magistrate for anyone intending to convert, and invalidates religious conversions performed solely for marriage.

All offences under this cognisable and non-bailable law are prioritized for fast-track trials within six months.
