Centre Mandates 'One Officer, One Official Car' Policy to Cut Costs
To enforce strict fiscal discipline and curb the misuse of public resources, the Central Government has introduced the "One Officer, One Official Car" directive through the Ministry of Finance.
Under the new rules, senior bureaucrats holding additional charges in other ministries, departments, or public sector undertakings (PSUs) are barred from receiving multiple vehicles.
Officers must rely solely on their originally assigned staff car. Additionally, using vehicles belonging to PSUs and autonomous bodies for routine administrative duties has been strictly prohibited, except during official tours to those organizations.
Ministries have also been directed to keep surplus vehicle fleets in safe custody to prevent unnecessary spending.
This policy builds upon the 2022 staff car guidelines to eliminate administrative duplication, optimize government fleets, and significantly reduce avoidable expenditures on fuel and vehicle maintenance across all government departments.
