Centre Cuts Edible Oil Import Duties; Zero Duty on Crude Sunflower Oil

The Central government has announced a reduction in import duties on major edible oils to ease retail inflation and control household expenses ahead of the festive season.

Under the revised notifications issued by the Department of Revenue, the Basic Customs Duty (BCD) on crude sunflower oil has been completely scrapped, reducing it from 10% to absolute zero.

Additionally, the import duties on crude soybean oil and crude palm oil have been slashed from 10% to 5%.

Duties on refined variants of soybean, palm, and sunflower oils have similarly been lowered from 32.5% to a range of 22.5% and 27.5%.

India relies heavily on imports to satisfy nearly two-thirds of its domestic edible oil consumption.

Officials hope that removing these fiscal barriers will lower landed costs, soften retail prices, and counteract anticipated price hikes by major consumer goods companies.
