Caste Slurs and Pressure: Father Demands Arrest of IIT Bombay Director and Professor
Mumbai : The tragic death of IIT Bombay B.Tech student Sahil Wakode has exposed deep-seated campus anguish, as his grieving parents grapple with devastating regret. Ravindra and Sonali Wakode revealed that when Sahil complained of mental torture and caste-based slurs just days before his September 18 suicide, they advised him to "ignore it" and focus on his studies. His mother tearfully admitted that taking him home that day could have saved his life.
Following statements to the Mumbai Crime Branch, Ravindra Wakode has demanded the immediate arrest of IIT Bombay Director Prof. Shireesh Kedare and Prof. Suryanarayana Doolla, warning of a hunger strike if accountability is delayed. Prof. Doolla has been named in an FIR under the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act and sent on leave, while a 10-member high-level probe committee has been formed by the Board of Governors.
The tragedy initially unfolded following an exam dispute where Sahil was accused of using a mobile device—an integrity incident the institute prematurely publicized, later drawing widespread student outrage and an institutional apology. Protests continue to mount as family and peers demand systemic reform against campus discrimination.
