Assam: Lakhimpur doctor’s daughter becomes Baroness at House of Lords
New Delhi : Ayesha Hazarika became the first British-Indian of Assamese descent to be appointed to the House of Lords, the upper chamber of the country’s parliament. She took her seat as ‘Baroness Hazarika of Coatbridge’.
The former stand-up comedian and political commentator took to social media platform X to announce the news of her ceremonial induction.
Apart from being a broadcaster, Hazarika has previously worked as a special adviser to prominent Labour leaders like Gordon Brown and Ed Miliband.
Baroness Ayesha Yusuf Hazarika is the daughter of Dr. Liyaqat Ali Hazarika from North Lakhimpur who moved to Glasgow in the 1960s.
Her grandfather, the late Yusuf Ali Hazarika was a renowned lawyer and Chairman of the North Lakhimpur Municipality Board.
