BJP alleges ‘Sheesh Mahal 2’ at Kejriwal’s new residence, AAP calls claims fake
New Delhi : The political crisis within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) intensified on Saturday as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stepped up its attack on former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, while also seeking to capitalise on the defection of seven AAP Rajya Sabha members.
Delhi deputy chief minister and BJP leader Parvesh Verma accused Kejriwal of abandoning his “common man” image, alleging that his newly allotted residence at Lodhi Estate had been upgraded with luxury features beyond prescribed norms. Addressing a press conference, Verma claimed the bungalow had effectively become a “Sheesh Mahal 2” and alleged that private funds were used for high-end modifications.
“Delhi’s voters have already rejected this ‘Rehman dacoit,’ forcing him to shift his focus toward Punjab,” Verma said, while presenting visuals that he said showed the interiors of the residence. He also alleged that several AAP leaders, including those facing legal scrutiny, continued to occupy government accommodations in Delhi and Punjab.
Verma went ahead to display visuals of what he claimed were from Kejriwal’s new residence.
The AAP rejected the allegations. Party Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh described the visuals as “completely fake” and said the party would initiate defamation proceedings against Verma and media organisations that aired them. Singh also challenged BJP leaders, including Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Lieutenant Governor, to make their official residences public for comparison.
The exchange comes a day after a major setback for AAP, with seven of its ten Rajya Sabha MPs switching to the BJP. The group, led by Raghav Chadha, includes Swati Maliwal, Harbhajan Singh and Sandeep Pathak. The MPs invoked provisions related to party merger to retain their seats.
Chadha said the move reflected concerns over the party’s direction, alleging that AAP had deviated from its founding principles. BJP president Nitin Nabin welcomed the leaders, saying their induction would strengthen the goal of “Viksit Bharat 2047” under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Kejriwal has accused the BJP of orchestrating the defections to destabilise the AAP government in Punjab. The BJP, however, has maintained that the departures stem from internal dissatisfaction within AAP and its recent electoral setbacks in Delhi.
