The Union Cabinet approved the bill to repeal three agricultural laws and also extended the period of free ration

New Delhi: Five days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the decision to repeal three controversial agricultural laws against which farmers have been protesting for a year, the Union Cabinet on Wednesday called for withdrawal of the laws in the upcoming Parliament session. Bill approved.

Now the bill approved by the cabinet will be introduced in the winter session of Parliament starting next week.

In a move that will benefit lakhs of beneficiaries across the country, the central government on Wednesday decided to extend the 'PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana' to provide free ration till March 2022. An announcement to this effect was made by Union Minister Anurag Thakur. The minister said that there will be an estimated food subsidy of Rs 53,344.52 crore on food grains under the fifth phase.

The central government last year announced PM-GKAY for all beneficiaries covered under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) in view of the economic disruptions caused by the COVID pandemic.

The PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana was to end on 30 November. As part of PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, the Center provides 5 kg of food grains free of cost to around 80 crore NFSA beneficiaries.

In this scheme, the center is giving rice and wheat to the bulk consumers under the OMSS policy to improve the availability and check prices in the domestic market.
