Eiffel Tower catches fire, blaze forces evacuation of 1,200 visitors
New Delhi: The Eiffel Tower in Paris was evacuated today, December 24, after a fire erupted at the iconic landmark, prompting the removal of approximately 1,200 visitors. French authorities confirmed that flames were first spotted in the elevator shaft between the first and second floors of the tower, reported local media.
Firefighters were quickly deployed to the scene, working to control the blaze. Initial reports suggest that the fire may have been triggered by an overheating device near an elevator cable, according to a police source cited by Boulevard Voltaire.
The Eiffel Tower is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world. On average, the monument receives between 15,000 and 25,000 visitors daily, as noted by the statistics database RoadGenius.
This isn’t the first time the tower has faced a blaze. In January 1956, a fire in the tower's television transmission room caused significant damage.
