Tamil Nadu: DMK Announces 28-Year-Old Graduate Priya Rajan As Chennai Mayor


Chennai: DMK announces a 28-year-old graduate Priya Rajan as the Mayor of Chennai. Priya will be the first Dalit woman Mayor of Chennai.

Priya is the granddaughter of ex-MLA Chengai Sivam. After the indirect polls on Friday, Priya will be officially elected also as the third woman Mayor of Chennai after Tara Cherian in 1958 and Kamakshi Jayaraman in 1971.

The DMK has also announced Mahesh Kumar as the Deputy Mayor of Chennai. According to a press release issued by the DMK, overall, nine men and 11 women have been announced for Mayor posts while 10 men and five women have been announced for Deputy Mayor posts. 

Of all the representatives to the top posts of the civic body, 20 of them have completed their undergraduate degrees while 11 representatives have completed their post-graduate studies.

The other women Mayors announced by DMK include Indirani as the Mayor of Madurai, Kalpana as Mayor of Coimbatore, Nagarathinam as Mayor of Erode, Sujatha Anathakumar as Mayor of Vellore,  Sundari as Mayor of Cuddalore, Kavitha Ganesan as Mayor of Karur, Elamathi as Mayor of Dindigul, Sangeetha Inbam as Mayor of Sivakasi, Vasanthakumari as Mayor Of Tambaram and Mahalakshmi Yuvaraj as Mayor of Kanchipuram.

The mayors of the remaining districts are M Anbazhagan as Mayor of Tiruchy, Saravanan as Mayor of Thirunelveli, A Ramachandran as Mayor of Salem, N Dinesh Kumar as Mayor of Tirupur,  Ramanathan as Mayor of Thanjavur, Tamilarasan as Mayor of Thamizhagan, Sathya as Mayor of Osur, MP Jegan as Mayor of Thoothukudi, Mahesh as Mayor of Nagercoil, G Udhayakumar as Mayor of Avadi.
